West Hall campsite

West Hall is South Tyneside Scout District’s campsite, located near Whitburn in South Tyneside. It is an enclosed 3½ acre site (approximately 250m by 150m) containing a mix of buildings, woodland and open fields. As well as traditional camping, West Hall is ideally placed for a variety of activities including a number of nature walks in the surrounding area. West Hall is not far from South Shields and Sunderland’s award winning coastlines and beaches and is only a 35 minute drive to Newcastle and a 15 minutes drive to Sunderland city centre.

The main building (BP Lodge) contains bunk room accommodation for 34, a main hall, an industrial kitchen, several toilets / shower rooms, a meeting room and the district office. The main hall contains tables & chairs, a projector & audio facilities and a wood-burning stove. Bunk rooms contain bunk beds and are split into rooms of 4 (and a single room of 2). The building is access-friendly with a ramp leading into the main hall. One of the accommodation wings is designed specifically for access by wheelchair users and includes an access friendly toilet / shower room.

Westfield Lodge is a smaller building suitable for training purposes or as a base for larger activity days. It comprises of a main room with a small kitchenette, a wood-burning stove and toilet facilities.

The site has a variety of camping areas in both woodland and in open fields. Several have fireplaces for open fire cooking, and there is a large campfire circle at the south end of the site. The site can accommodate over 100 campers at any one time (possibly more with careful planning). A separate shower / toilet block with an access friendly toilet and shower facility (refurbished in 2010- 2011) is available for use by campers, with drinking water and washing up facilities. A large permanent marquee (approx. 9m x 6m) is available for site users – internal or external (a perfect place for ‘dry’ activities or food service when wet).

The site plays host to many events and activities. Users can be given access to free activity equipment (some must be requested). West Hall can arrange equipment for adventurous activities such as archery, crate stacking, an obstacle course, tree climbing and stilt walking, and instructors may be available for these activities for Scout groups (given sufficient notice). Over the years the site has hosted large events for Scouting, Guiding, youth groups and private functions such as wedding receptions and biker / scooter rallies. The site also hosts an annual fireworks display which is open to the general public.
